Blood pressure monitors are among the most requested self-monitoring devices for pharmacies, care homes and distributors. Yet two devices that look alike on the shelf can differ widely in accuracy, cuff fit and compliance paperwork. This is the checklist we apply when sourcing them for our B2B catalogue.
Upper-arm or wrist?
Upper-arm models are the most common format in professional settings and the usual reference for home monitoring. Wrist models are compact and easy to carry, but they are more sensitive to arm position, so they suit a different customer. If you stock only one format, choose upper-arm.
Measurement method and stated accuracy
Most mainstream devices use the oscillometric method with a pressure sensor. Ask for the accuracy stated by the manufacturer: a typical specification is ± 3 mmHg on pressure and ± 3 % of the reading on pulse. Ask also whether the model has been clinically validated, for example against the ISO 81060-2 protocol, and request the document rather than relying on a claim on the box.
Cuff size and comfort
A cuff that does not fit gives unreliable readings. Check the arm circumference range printed in the specifications and whether a larger cuff is offered. Check also how the cuff closes and whether the tubing is detachable.
Features your customers actually use
- A large, high-contrast display that older users can read.
- Pulse rate display and irregular heartbeat detection.
- Memory for previous readings, if your customers track values.
- Power: batteries included, or a mains adapter option.
Compliance paperwork
In the European Union, blood pressure monitors are medical devices. Before ordering, ask for the CE marking, the declaration of conformity under Regulation (EU) 2017/745, the identity of the EU responsible person, and instructions in the language of your market. Keep these documents on file for your own customers.
